DEFINITIONS
Mastalgia is breast pain. Breast pain were divided into 2 groups:
Cyclic Mastalgia: associated with menstruation
Non-cyclic Mastalgia: not associated with menstruation and can be derived from the breast and surrounding structures in the breast (eg muscle or joints).
CAUSE
Mastalgia type most often found is cyclic Mastalgia that occurs due to hormonal changes. Some women experience breast tenderness around ovulation (release of eggs) that continued until menstruation arrives. Pain may be felt only in one breast or it could also spread to the armpit.
Pain in the non-cyclic Mastalgia usually continuously available and only at certain locations in the breast. The causes can be:
- Injury or impact on breast
- Artritik pain in the chest cavity and neck that spread to the breast
- Gestation
- Breastfeeding
- Pre-menopause
- Estrogen therapy
- Breast Infection
- Approaching puberty
- Drugs (eg digitalis, aldomet, aldakton, anadrol, and chlorpromazine)
- Alcoholics with liver damage
- Certain substances in food or drinks (eg: metilsantin contained in coffee. Breast cancer (but not every pain in the breast is a sign of breast cancer).
SYMPTOMS
Breast pain or breast pain arises when pressed. Pain can be felt in one or both breasts, the pain may spread or localized.
DIAGNOSIS
Diagnosis based on symptoms and physical examination. If the breast examination discovered a lump, then performed the following checks:
- Mammogram breast ultrasound
- Breast tissue biopsy.
TREATMENT
Cyclic Mastalgia
- Diuretics
- EPO (evening primrose oil, doses of 3 grams / day) EPO contain polyunsaturated fatty acids and can normalize the fatty acid content in patients with cyclic Mastalgia.
- Pill
- Progesterone
- Tamoxifen Tamoxifen is an anti-estrogen that is used to treat or prevent breast cancer. These drugs are effective in reducing Mastalgia.
- Viteks (Vitex agnus-castus, a dose of 40 mg / day)-Viteks can balance hormone levels in patients with cyclic Mastalgia and premenstrual syndrome.
- Other drugs are also used is danazol and bromocriptyne
· For both types of mastitis can be performed following treatment:
- Use a comfortable and fitting bra. It is very important if people with heavy exercise. Fitting bra can reduce pain dramatically.
- Reduce intake of saturated fat and salt
- Vitamin E (400-800 units / day)
- Reduce intake of coffee, tea and cocoa
- Drug-counter pain reliever. Most pain is mild and disappears by itself within a few months or years
